Item Alteration and Addition in the Light of the Translator’s Invisibility : An Application to the Movie Frozen(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2019) Adel Adel Abdelfatah Soltan, MariamWhen translating a text from one culture to another, there exists the problem of the different linguistic and cultural aspects between the two cultures. The literal translation of texts from the source culture may lead to incomprehensibility in the target text. This paper aims to investigate the translation strategies of addition and alteration in the movie Frozen using Venuti’s theory of the translator’s invisibility. The translation of the movie Frozen from English into Arabic will be investigated using this theory and these strategies. This is a qualitative and quantitative research utilizing content analysis, comparison, and quantitative data as research tools. A comparison between the original text Frozen and its target text will be incorporated to show instances of alteration and addition as strategies to attain the concept of the invisibility of the translator. The research concludes that alteration and addition are necessary to achieve comprehensibility and acceptability in translation, and to bring the text closer to the target text receivers’ culture.Item Analyzing Egyptian EFL Secondary Stage Learners’ Grammatical Errors in Writing(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2019) ElZahraa Hussein, FatmaThis study aimed at finding the most common grammatical errors committed by Egyptian EFL learners in writing. In order to achieve the aim of the current study, a random sample of thirty Egyptian EFL secondary stage students was selected from Dar El Taryba School. A writing diagnostic test adopted from Cambridge English preliminary teachers’ handbook and Euro exams B1 webset was used as the tool for the current study. The test consisted of three questions, and the study participants were required to answer all the questions of the test. The study results indicated that more than 90% of the study participants committed grammatical errors in their writing related to wrong tenses, incorrect subject-verb-agreement while 60% of the students committed grammatical errors in their writing related to the wrong use of comparative and superlative forms. Based on the study findings, the hypothesis was partially confirmed and partially refuted. However, the study findings cannot be generalized as the study was a small scale one that was conducted on a random sample of only thirty Egyptian EFL secondary stage students in only one Egyptian school. Therefore, it is recommended that it would be better to conduct larger scale studies in the Egyptian context in order to ensure the reliability of the findings. According to the study results, it is suggested that EFL teachers should integrate the writing classes with the grammar classes in order to help EFL learners overcome such grammatical errors in their writingItem Analyzing the Efficiency of the Translation Brief in Translating Electronic Commerce Websites: A Functionalist Skopos Approach(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2019) Mamdouh, AmrThis study aims to investigate the effect of the translation brief on the quality of translation by translation major students. The problem is that previous studies showed that in the real practice of translation, many translation task providers (agencies, clients) do not provide the translators with a brief to guide them and ensure the purpose of the translation is clear. Accordingly, this situation represents an obstacle for translators in general and translation students in particular who are on their way to the translation market. This paper adapts translation-oriented model of text analysis by Christiane Nord (1991), to analyze source texts on an e-commerce website, to establish the purpose of this translation, and therefore adapting it in a brief. This type of translation (e-commerce translation) is chosen because it is one of the main types that a new translator in the market will find available. Further, a sample of translation major students are chosen to perform two translation tasks, first without a brief and then with one, to examine the effect of the brief on the quality of translation and achieving its purpose. The present researcher hypothesis that when translating with a brief the performance will improve, which is proven by the results of the tasks, as their percentage of achieving the purpose improved by 100%Item Comparing EFL Listening and Writing Skills of Egyptian General Secondary Education Graduates vs. IGCSE Graduates: Lessons and Implications = مقارنة مهارات الاستماع والكتابة في اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية بين خريجي التعليم الثانوي العام المصري وخريجي التعليم الثانوي البريطاني (IGCSE) الدروس والآثار المترتبة(October University for Modern Sciences and Arts, 2020) Mohamed, Hoda HeshamThis study aimed at comparing EFL listening and writing skills of the Egyptian general secondary education graduates and IGCSE graduates in order to identify the areas of strength and weakness in each educational system with regard to those skills in particular. The study also aimed at identifying useful lessons and implications for enhancing the quality of EFL listening and writing education in the Egyptian general secondary educational system. The current study made use of two tools. First, a listening and writing IELTS exam was administrated on ten Egyptian general secondary education graduates and ten IGCSE graduates in eight different universities. Second, a structured interview was conducted with five IGCSE instructors on the effectiveness of the IGCSE curriculum as well as the teaching methods and testing strategies adopted according to the IGCSE. The research results indicated that the IGCSE graduates significantly outperformed Egyptian general secondary education graduates in their writing and listening skills. Research results regarding the IGCSE instructors’ interview analysis revealed that one aspect of the hypothesis was confirmed, which is providing enough daily practice in listening comprehension and writing skills as a teaching distinguisher according to the IGCSE system. However, three other aspect of the hypothesis were not stressed by the IGCSE instructors in the interview; these were adopting skill-based instruction, offering individualized, prompt and detailed feedback and following a clear marking scheme for listening and well-defined rubrics for writing as prominent distinguishers to EFL teaching in the IGCSE system. Rather the interviewees stressed offering authentic listening texts and real-life writing tasks and the chance of a test retake to improve the students’ scores as two important elements that distinguished to EFL listening comprehension and writing skills teaching and assessment in the IGCSE system Item Cover image Normal view MARC view ISBD view “Womanism” Between African-American and Egyptian Women : A Comparative Study of Selected Short Stories by Alice Walker and Salwa Bakr(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2018) Ahmed M. Nouhy, MaryamItem The cover page, figures, tables, references and appendix are excluded from the word count(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2019) Mohamed Kamal, SaraThis study aimed at finding out the perceptions of university level EFL students and instructors concerning online courses quality and effectiveness. To achieve this aim, a random sample of thirty EFL university level students was selected from three different faculties at MSA University. Also, a random sample of fifteen instructors from three different levels of English courses was selected to conduct the current study. The researcher designed a questionnaire and a structured interview, and they were used as the research tools after ensuring their reliability and validity. The questionnaire consisted of five questions while the interview consisted of six questions. The study participants were asked to answers the questions according to their perceptions. The findings of the study revealed that both the study hypotheses were partially confirmed and partially refuted. The majority of EFL university level instructors and students who participated in the current study believed that online EFL courses are effective and of reasonable quality. Bearing in mind the fact that this was a small scale study conducted on only thirty students and fifteen instructors in one Egyptian university only, the results might be different if the same study was conducted on a larger scale. Therefore, it is suggested that larger scale studies should be conducted in the Egyptian context to obtain more reliable results. Based on the study results, it is recommended to conduct experimental studies to investigate the effectiveness of varied online courses. In addition, more training should be provided for instructors who teach online courses to better meet the individual needs of their EFL students.Item Cultural and Political Ideologies in Selected Works from Arabic and English Children's Literature(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2018) Abdel Halim, WagehThe problem with analysis done on children’s literature is that critics often describe this field as not complex as adult literature, which abandons and ignores the ideologies this field represents and implants in the minds of children. This dissertation is conducted to present summaries, examinations and comparisons of Kamel Kilani’s children’s stories “Safirat Al Qamar” and “Al Singab Al Sagheer” to Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr. Fox and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to prove the argument of the study that these works from Arabic and English children’s literature affect the Arabic and British child’s cultural and intellectual development on many layers and levels through the cultural and postcolonial ideologies they explicate and present. The study uses postcolonial approaches of reading and analysis, and concludes that Kilani’s works are rather educational and rigid, while Dahl’s works leave more space for imagination and they fixate more on imperial doctrinesItem Deconstructing the Stereotypes: The Myth of Arab Anti-Semitism(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2018) Al-Moataz, TasneemItem A Dream or A Dystopia : Application of The Theory of Dystopia on Modern Television Shows(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2019) John Mina, ChristinaRealizing that the future may not always hold what people usually expect has driven a lot of writers into considering the future as a doomed dystopia. A dystopia is a corrupted post- apocalyptic world that is undesirable and frightening, considering the history of humankind, such a description does not seem far from the reality inflicted by wars and destructive technology. This study aims to compare between episodes from the series Black Mirror and episodes from the animated sitcom The Jetsons in order to figure out the hidden subliminal dystopian atmosphere in The Jetsons and analyze the dystopia of Black Mirror. It also verifies the notion that despite the negativity shown in the episodes it is mostly the negative outlook of the writers themselves and not necessarily based on facts, as they are sometimes influenced by the works of previous content creators that portrayed a similar depressing image. To the researcher’s knowledge a similar study has not yet been conducted and leaving this topic without discussion would result in the misconception that the future is unavoidably horrifying with all the technology that it may offer. The dissertation attempts a comparative analysis of dystopia in futuristic worlds through the selected television series in question, to understand the minds of the scriptwriters and their predictions on the misuse of coming advanced technology. A close textual analysis contrasting the ideas of the utopian world of Plato, is applied and focuses on the similarities and differences in the events and the characters of the two drastically diverse works. The findings and the conclusion of the study point at the fact that there is still hope for a better future because although many previous authors believed the future would be horrible it still did not turn out as bad or as messed up as they had expected.Item Echoes of Narcissus in Modern Literature: A Psychoanalytic View of Narcissistic Characters in D.H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers and Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary = أصدا ء نارسيس (النرجسيه) فى الأدب الحديث: تحليل نفسى للشخصيات النرجسية فى" أبناء و أحباء" لديفيد هربرت لورانس و "السيدة بوفارى" لجوستاف فلوبير(October University for Modern Sciences and Arts, 2020) Elsherif, Mariam Mostafa Ahmed IbrahimIn modern literature psychology and psychoanalytic approaches became a matter of interest for many modern writers, especially after the emergence of Freud’s psychoanalytic approaches and theories at the beginning of the 20th century. The theories of psychoanalysis became useful for literary writers who sought to present a realistic portrayal of human experience, as well as an important tool for literary critics in the exploration and analysis of characters’ actions and motivations. One of the psychoanalytic terms which are quite useful in the analysis of modern literary works is ‘narcissism’. In his book On Narcissism: An Introduction (1914) Sigmund Freud discusses narcissism and the narcissistic characters. The term “Narcissism” is derived from the name and character of Narcissus in Greek mythology, a young man who becomes so very fond of himself when he sees his own reflection in the water that he becomes blind to everything and everybody else. Influenced by the myth of Narcissus, Freud developed his theory about the narcissistic character as a person who is consumed by ‘self-love’, is self-centred, has no sympathy or empathy toward others and is only concerned about his own needs. The aim of the study is to explore how self-centeredness and selfishness as a human trait and their destructive consequences on both the society and the individual are reflected in Greek mythology and translated in literature. The study suggests that narcissism as a psychological trait that affects behavior and relationships is a universal concern that is tackled in literature. D.H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers and Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary are considered remarkable modern works, presenting complex, narcissistic characters which could be a rich psychoanalytic material for literary analysis. Thus, Characters like Emma Bovary, Gertrude Morel and Paul Morel see nothing in the mirror of life except their own reflection. Item The Effect of Salespeople on the Consumer decision-making in Egypt(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2019) Mohamed Riad Mohamed, AyatullahThe Effect of Salespeople on the Consumer Decision-making in Egypt Due to the vital importance of the behavior of consumers and their purchase decisions as well as the impact of those on the profitability of any organization, the attention of everyone in this field had been directed towards this topic. Good marketing depends on a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the behavior of consumers. The subject of consumer purchase decision is of great concern because people in Egypt and everywhere make buying decisions every day. Thus, several aspects in this area need to be studied in order for consumers to buy the products that match their styles of living. Furthermore, other aspects need to be considered by marketers, salespeople, organizations in order to understand how to compete with other brands as well as which customers to target. This dissertation aims to investigate the important factors that affect the consumers decision making as well identifying the role of the salespeople and their great influence on the decision making of consumers in Egypt. The study is carried out employing a quantitative method of data collection using an online survey on 120 of the Egyptian consumers to study the several factors that affect their decision making as well as the significant influence of the salesperson on their buying decision. The research design is based upon a descriptive study between the effect of salespeople on the consumer decision making. The findings prove that salespeople negatively affect the Egyptian consumers. According to the conducted online survey on consumers, the researcher provided that the Human Resources managers in Egypt who play the role of the selection in any company should focus their scopes on hiring salespeople with the attributes of sincerity, honesty, not pressuring consumers, asking 3 clarifying questions, presenting accurate information as well as approaching the consumers when needed. The Effect of Salespeople on the Consumer Decision-makingItem Euro-Feminism in Margot Badran's Translation of Mudhakkirat Huda Shaarawi 'Harem Years': A Translation and Cultural Studies Approach(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2018) Salah, MariamBadran used different strategies in Harem Years to translate Shaarawi’s diaries. These strategies led to major problems such as imposing Western thoughts in the translated version. The problem was that Badran delivered different message to the target audiences. The aim of this paper was to study Euro-feminism in Margot Badran’s translation of Huda Shaarawi’s diaries. This paper used the manipulation theory (1985) by Theo Hermans. It discussed how the text was selected for translation, and how the translator played a role in that selection. Also, it was about the manipulation of translating the source text considers as rewriting. The Manipulation theory played a vital role between the translator and target culture. The theory discussed that translators and translation are impacted by the ideology of a certan culture. This study used a qualitative research methodology that employs content analysis and comparison as tools analysis. The data was about Huda Shaarawi’s diaries and the translated book Hareem Years by Margot Badran. The research chose this data because of the major differences between the original book and the translated book. It attempted to answer a question on how did Margot Badran enforce Euro-feminism in Harem Years. She focused more on the history of Egypt than translating Shaarawi’s diariesItem Feminism in Retrospect: How Queer Representation in Literature Reinforces Feminism. o A Psychoanalytic Feminist Comparative Study into Virginia Woolf’s ‘Orlando: A Biography’ and Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray = إستذكار النسوية: كيف يعزز التمثيل (الكويري) النسوية فى الأدب. دراسة مقارنة تحليلية نفسية من منظور نسوى بين "أورلاندو" لفرجينيا وولف و "صورة دوريان غراي" لأوسكار وايلد(October University for Modern Sciences and Arts, 2020) Gamila, Donia MohamedFeminism mainly – but not exclusively- is concerned with fighting patterns of gender inequality, in order to funnel down these general patterns into a causative concentrate that would help touch on the fundamental cause of female subordination. The emergence of a multitude of ideologies surrounding feminism, and the presence of various feminist movements, has resulted in the production of ‘feminist theory’; where some feminist theorists provide analyses and explanation that evidently challenge and could transform gender inequality. Consequently, as the usage of psychoanalysis as a feminist theoretical tool, through the scope of classical psychoanalytic theory, is considered a delicate ground to a great extent; as the development of female psychosexuality is constantly measured against and compared to the masculine “norm”. By utilizing psychoanalysis from a feminist perspective, this paper presses the direct relationship between feminism and queer theory; and proves through the looking glasses of Freudian and Lacanian Psychoanalysis how queer characters in literature; such as, ‘Orlando’ as a transgender character and Wilde’s three homosexual male protagonists, can reinforce feminism and negate the validity of gender inequality. Item Identity and Feminism in Translation: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Maya Angelou and Nazik Al Malaika Poetry(October university for modern sciences and arts, 2019) Mohamed Abdallah Sherif, BasmaFeminism and identity are controversial concepts where they can meet and diverse at different points within poetry compared to its translation. The role of feminism in asserting one individual identity or even collective identity represents a problematic area of study in translation. Sociocultural approaches in translation studies vary in their techniques of translating different texts in the light of their interrelations with identity and feminism. The present study aims at exploring the relationship between identity and feminism in the original productions of Maya Angelou and Nazik Al Malaika selected poems and their translations using a multidisciplinary approach that combines between post colonial and gender based studies. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Sherry Simon (2005) and Gayatri Spivak (2004) theories of translation in relation to identity and feminism. This paper is a qualitative theoretical research that uses content analysis and comparisons as research tools. It concluded that the analysis and discussion of data have proved that identity and feminism are inseparable due to their absolute and essential connectedness that is emphasized by the fact that each concept of them completes and confirms the other. As a recommendation, translation should reflect the intersection of identity and feminism instead of their diversities in order to assert the writer point of view.Item Identity and Feminism in Translation: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Maya Angelou and Nazik Al Malaika Poetry(October University of Modern Sciences and Arts, 2019) Mohamed Abdallah Sherif, BasmaFeminism and identity are controversial concepts where they can meet and diverse at different points within poetry compared to its translation. To achieve this aim, a test was designed and administered by the researcher on a random sample of fifteen Egyptian EFL secondary stage students at Modern Infinity Language School. It was hypothesized that (a) Egyptian EFL secondary stage students find it most difficult to comprehend phrasal verbs that consist of a verb + an adverb particle + a preposition as compared to the other two types of phrasal verbs and (b) Egyptian EFL secondary stage students find it most difficult when they are required to guess the meanings of phrasal verbs on their own without being offered any alternatives. Based on the analysis of the test results, it was revealed that both of the research hypotheses were confirmed.
