Abstract

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based sensors using silver (Ag) thin films have been successfully applied for the detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas. The SPR sensors have cobalt-phthalocyanine (Co-Pc) as an active add-layer. A surface plasmon was generated via a prism coupler in Kretschmann configuration. We found that the detection limit of SPR sensor is 0.07 ppm in an ambient environment at normal temperature and pressure (NTP). The simple structure of the SPR sensor makes it superior to liquid chemical sensors for the detection of NO2. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
