Item Infrastructure and Forecasting Models for Integrating Natural Gas Grid within Smart Grids(IEEE, 2012) Gabbar, Hossam A.; Ayoub, Nasser M.Almost all the current literature is focused on smart grids as a neat way to manage power generation and its delivery. This trend was acceptable in the period of idea generation and development; however in the delivery phase, we will have to further extend the concept and broaden its application. The smart grids should consider more energy related applications, e.g., including and monitoring the Natural Gas Grid and enhancing their role in supporting peak load shifting applications within the smart grid. This paper shares the current efforts for promoting smart grid concept by investigating integration of gas grid into smart power grids. Three ways for potential integration; in addition to PHEVs, and possible energy grid architecture, were presented. The importance of forecasting models on the energy grid infrastructure development and its infrastructure requirements were elaborated.Item Integrated modeling for optimized regional transportation with compressed natural gas fuel(ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV, 2016) Gabbar, Hossam A.; Bedard, Raymond; Ayoub, NasserTransportation represents major energy consumption where fuel is considered as a primary energy source. Recent development in the vehicle technology revealed possible economical improvements when using natural gas as a fuel source instead of traditional gasoline. There are several fuel alternatives such as electricity, which showed potential for future long-term transportation. However, the move from current situation where gasoline vehicle is dominating shows high cost compared to compressed natural gas vehicle. This paper presents modeling and simulation methodology to optimize performance of transportation based on quantitative study of the risk-based performance of regional transportation. Emission estimation method is demonstrated and used to optimize transportation strategies based on life cycle costing. Different fuel supply scenarios are synthesized and evaluated, which showed strategic use of natural gas as a fuel supply. (C) 2015 Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University. The inclusion of the potential risks raised by the different stakeholders in this framework will help the LCA professionals to identify accurate system boundaries of their study. This research addresses some limitations of frameworks presented so far by providing process activity modeling, using Type-zero method of integrated definition language, IDEFO, as a tool to describe each phase of its application. The proposed framework considers the LCA risk-based analysis in three modules namely; (i) establish of the life cycle stages, (ii) identify risk indicators and perform risk assessment, and (iii) manage risks through applying the risk assessment results to the life cycle of building's energy system. The risk based life cycle assessment (RBLCA) framework proposed here is further explained in a case study of performing RBLCA for a hybrid energy supply system (HESS) that supplies power to a hotel building. This approach allows us to investigate unfavorable impacts and risks of using HESS as way for energy conservation. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
