Item Investigating the energy-environmental Kuznets curve: Evidence from Egypt(2013) Abdou D.M.S.; Atya E.M.; Department of Economics; Faculty of Management Sciences; October University for Modern Sciences and Arts; Cairo; Egypt; Department of Economics; Zagazig University; Sharkeya; EgyptThis study examines to what extent recent empirical evidence can substantiate the claim that annual emission constraints have a modest effect on long run economic growth rates. The paper studies specifically the contribution of carbon dioxide emissions on growth in Egyptian economy during the period 1961-2008. Results indicate that there is a negative relationship between GDP per capita and carbon dioxide emissions. Results suggest that institutions play an important role to achieve progress in setting an effective policies and regulations to decrease pollutants' level that arise from industries and rationalising the consumption of energy. Developing countries and especially Egypt need to adopt a set of effective policies to face the vulnerable growth and environmental degradation. Based on these results, we assert that environmental policy should consider the different characteristics of each country and type of pollutant. We use life expectancy at birth as a measure for the health and gross domestic product per capita (constant 2000US$) as a measure for the wealth. We employ the cointegration analysis and utilize the linear and nonlinear forms. This paper concluded that for the linear model, the results indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between health and wealth. For non-linear model, the results show that health and wealth have inverse U-shape relationship. This conclusion will help policy makers and researchers in developing countries with high fertility rate to consider a strategic health program to achieve impacts on nation's health and human wealth. However, further work need to be done in order to specify exactly which policies will be effective in improving economic growth and development in LDCs. EuroJournals, Inc. 2012.
